Expectations: We all have them, don’t we? But have you ever considered whether our expectations of ourselves align with those of others? If not, it can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. Imagine if you set a deadline for someone and they miss it. It’s natural to feel frustrated and perceive them as unreliable or lazy. Especially with remote work, meeting deadlines can be more challenging. But here’s the key – have you clearly communicated your expectations? Did they do the same? (Sadly, we’re not mind readers.)

If not, the result is conflict.

Navigating conflicts can be tricky, as everyone reacts differently. It’s easy to blame others without reflecting on our role in the situation. Think about this for yourself:

I have (fill in the blank) expectations of myself.
I have (fill in the blank) expectations of others.

Do they match? 😬

Here are a few tips you can use today:

  • Clearly define expectations with employee and across the team.
  • Establish deadlines and prioritizing tasks. (for YOU too!)
  • Create an open and inclusive environment for questions and feedback.
  • Communicate, Communicate, Communicate.

Aligning your expectations with others is critical to avoiding misunderstandings and fostering a more productive environment. You will build stronger, more trusting relationships by reflecting on your expectations, clearly communicating them, and encouraging open dialogue.
