Negative people drain me.
Have you ever felt this way about a co-worker? I know I have!
Well, if they’ve decided that they are not going anywhere soon, you’re going to have to work together. Here’s the bummer: you worked hard to get where you are, and you can’t let ONE negative Nelly (or Ned) drag you down.
Before you continue banging your head against your desk (or kitchen table), try this:
YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THEIR BEHAVIOR. You can only control how you respond to it. It is not always easy, but it can, and NEEDS to be done.
- Walk away. From your desk or camera. Physically remove yourself from the situation. If you can’t, just focus on you, and not RSVP to their pity party.
- Don’t engage. Smile and nod. Smile and nod.
- Get out of your own head. It’s not about you, so don’t waste your mental energy.
Years ago one of my mentors shared this with me from David J. Pollay:
You’ve heard me say before that we all react to conflict in different ways. Here is where “Coaching through Conflict” comes in. I’ve designed this program for business professionals like you, who need a little extra help in navigating team dynamics and how to respond in the most productive way.
If this sounds like you and your team, schedule a quick call and let’s work together to create more effective workplace relationships.
